Joyous Dispersion

2019-ongoing :   My paintings have been driven by the play between stability and change. The compositional arrangement of each painting begins with six lines, open and closed, and a phrase or word. These hexagrams are appropriated from the I Ching (The Book of Changes). The word or phrase also comes from this ancient Chinese divination text, where complex abstract ideas linked to human existence are discussed.

The initial parts of the painting process led to the improvisational search. The shifting surfaces, shapes, layers of translucent color, and relief surfaces—built with beeswax, pigment, and detritus—attempt to evoke transitions from one phenomenon to another which are connected to the physical and contemplative world.
